Haywood Helps gala to raise funds for prison project

Aug 26, 2014

Now that the Haywood Pathways Project has won the $50,000 grand prize in the Guaranteed Rate/Ty Pennington Ultimate Neighborhood Giveback Challenge, scores of people in the community are wondering how they can help.

One way to support the project is by buying a ticket to attend the Haywood Helps fundraising gala to be held from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Laurel Ridge Country Club. The fundraising event planned for the end of August has the potential to double the amount of funds on hand to tackle needed renovations at the former prison.

No date has yet been set for the Pennington workday, but plans are on the drawing board to ensure all in the community who want to play a role in the project have an opportunity to do so.

Pennington — best known for his Extreme Makeover television series  — will be hosting a new series “On the Menu” on TNT this fall where he will join chef Emeril Lagasse to create signature dishes for American food businesses, according to the publication, “Variety.” The television celebrity is a national spokesperson for Guaranteed Rate.

The gala will feature live entertainment from D’Jazz Band, heavy hors d’ oeuvres, and live and silent auctions.

Tickets cost $100 each and can be purchased at The Mountaineer, 220 N. Main St. in Waynesville, by sending checks to Mountain Projects/Haywood Helps, 2251 Old Balsam Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or donate through the Haywood Helps Facebook page by clicking “Give Now.”
