Haywood kindergarten registration opens

Mar 13, 2013
Kindergarten registration begins soon for Haywood County Schools.
The state legislature changed the minimum enrollment age two summers ago. Children must turn 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2013 to be eligible to register and enter kindergarten.
The revised law moved the legal school entry age up by a month and a half in an effort to reduce drop-out rates in later grades and improve the likelihood that children are ready for formal school when they begin kindergarten.

Elementary schools hold special registration and orientation sessions to help children and their families make a smooth transition into kindergarten before the school year begins.

The dates for Kindergarten registration are 3:30 p.m. March 26 for Hazelwood Elementary School; 9 a.m. April 9 for Jonathan Valley Elementary School; 10 a.m. April 11 for North Canton Elementary School; 12:30 p.m. April 15 for Central Elementary School; 8:30 a.m. April 16 for Meadowbrook Elementary School, 2-5 p.m. April 23 for Bethel Elementary School; 9 a.m. May 5 for Riverbend Elementary School; 4 p.m. May 9 for Junaluska Elementary School; and 1 p.m. May 13 for Clyde Elementary School.

To register a child, state law or school district policy requires parents to provide (1) a certified copy of the child's birth certificate, (2) proof of residence (i.e. driver’s license), and (3) the child's updated immunization record.

A certified copy of the child’s birth certificate is now required by law to be kept at the school in the student’s cumulative record. If parents only have one copy of the birth certificate, they are asked to obtain another one from the Register of Deeds at the Haywood County Courthouse (or other appropriate agency) to provide to the school on or before the first day of school.

In compliance with North Carolina law, all students entering kindergarten must present a health assessment (physical exam report) and certificate or immunization by the first day of school entry. The health assessment must have been completed within 12 months of school entry. A list of the required immunizations will be provided in the registration packet parents receive from the school during registration.

For additional information, parents are encouraged to contact their community school or the elementary supervisor at 456-2400.
