Haywood veterans — Apply for Honor Flight in May
Blue Ridge Honor Flight is preparing for another trip on May 13 to Washington, D.C., this time focusing on veterans of Korean and Vietnam. Haywood County veterans are encouraged to apply.
The mission of Blue Ridge Honor Flight is to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. — for free — to visit the memorials dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends.
The trip is a bit of a whirlwind, according to Marybeth Burns, Blue Ridge Honor Flight board member and coordinator.
“We leave from Asheville and fly up early in the morning,” she said. “When we get to D.C., we’ve been greeted by swing bands, dancing and singing, and a huge crowd of people with signs, applauded and cheering. [The veterans] are amazed, and there are lots of tears.”
It costs $500 to cover a veteran’s visit. Blue Ridge Honor Flight’s March for Veterans campaign helps sponsor veteran trips. Make a group or individual donation online, or mail it to Blue Ridge Honor Flight at 423 N. King St., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
