Hazelwood Elementary's Girls on the Run team collects sneakers!
Several girls at Hazelwood Elementary will be participating in this year’s Girls on the Run 5K which will be held at the Fletcher Community Park on Saturday, May 18. The girls have been training twice a week with their coaches, Courtney Clark, a kindergarten assistant, Amanda Parton, a Hazelwood parent and Lorrie Reece, a teacher's assistant and parent. As a part of the Girls on the Run program, they follow the GOTR curriculum. This curriculum gives the group an opportunity to participate in a Community Service Project. They discussed the importance of using their unique gifts and talents to positively impact their community. After much thought, they decided to participate in a program called “One World Running”. “One World Running’s” Mission Statement says that they are “an international program promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world”.
The students at Hazelwood Elementary are currently collecting sneakers/running shoes at the school for “One World Running”. Any community member who would like to donate running shoes, please bring them to Hazelwood Elementary to the attention of Courtney Clark. Through team leadership and commitment, they hope to be able to send many sneakers to people all around the world. Coach Clark says that “this has become a true commitment from the girls to not only work as a team, but to improve the lives of others”.
