HCA celebrates School Choice Week
Students from Haywood Christian Academy joined thousands of other schools across the nation by participating in the 2014 National School Choice Week across the country by expressing their thoughts on paper about the freedom of choice in education.
High school students wrote letters to senators, congressmen and other policymakers thanking them for supporting their option of school choice. Elementary school students made posters and wrote essays titled “What I Love about My School” that will be displayed throughout the school during the month of February. Essay winners were Colton Buchanan, sixth grade; Elle Chandler, fifth grade; Ariel Smith, fourth grade; and Grayson Hottel, third grade.
National School Choice Week is a nonpartisan and nonpolitical public awareness effort that provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the alternative education options for all children. The national effort coincides with the availability of school vouchers in North Carolina. Vouchers of up to $4,200 are available to qualified families to use this fall to attend a private school of their choice.
The priority deadline for voucher applications is Feb. 25; all eligible applications received between Feb. 1 and Feb. 25 will be placed in a lottery pool and have an equal chance of being selected. A waiting list will be created from the remaining applications received by the priority deadline based on the assigned lottery number. Applications can be found on the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority’s website at http://www.ncseaa.edu/OSG.htm.
