Haywood County residents looking for an affordable education degree may not need to look any farther than Clyde, where Haywood Community College is getting noticed for its affordable degree.
HCC was recently featured on OnlineU.org and on the Best Online College website as a college offering one of the most affordable early education degrees in the nation. OnlineU and Best Online College websites are both provide information about online colleges to help potential students choose an affordable degree that's right for them.
“We’re thrilled that the program has been recieved national and statewide attention,” said Wendy Hines, department chairman of Health and Human Services at HCC. “That’s been one of the goals of program — to provide a quality education. The program has steady increased in student enrollment since we went online.”
OnlineU recently completed extensive research into the cost of attending different online colleges to help students to find the most affordable online degrees. The results determined that HCC was one of the more affordable options when it comes to an early education degree.
The OnlineU website boasts that HCC offers the number seven most affordable early childhood education degree in the nation, with an annual tuition of $8,432.
“We acknowledged that students can’t leave work to come to campus,” Hines said. “Since we have offered it, it has grown to be one of the largest programs on campus and one largest early education programs in the state.”
Hines said the online early education program was developed as way to better accommodate its students.
“I think Haywood is a really great example of how a smaller community college can make a big impact with their online programs," noted Kimberly Wetter, head of marketing and PR at SR Education Group in an email. We hope OnlineU.org will help to bolster interest in Haywood as they have a strong commitment to keeping tuition costs down for their students.”
The OnlineU research concluded that the average price that students pay to attend this HCC program is in the lowest 25 percent for online colleges, as stated on the OnlineU website.
Hines said another reason the early education program had been so attractive was the variety of early education courses HCC offers.
“We offer a variety of associate degrees and specialty certificates,” Hines said, adding that teachers could work with children ranging from ages 8 and younger. Hines said the program included courses that would allow teachers to focus on working with younger students, special education students and even administration.
There are 2,285 students at HCC who can pursue online degrees at the associate and certification levels. Currently, 400 students are enrolled in the early education program.
A total of 68 percent of students at this HCC return each year, and 28 percent of students graduate within the expected time period.
