HCC Medical Assisting Program Receives Accreditation Until 2023

By Haywood Community College | Sep 26, 2013

Haywood Community College’s Medical Assisting program recently received a letter of award from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) granting continuing accreditation for the program for the full 10 years until 2023. This accreditation is granted by CAAHEP based upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

MAERB evaluates the program to ensure that Standards established by the American Association of Medical Assistants, The American Medical Association and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs are met. Programs are competency-based with over 200 different competencies taught throughout the program in administrative, clinical and laboratory  areas.

Maintaining accreditation of the program is required for graduates of the program to be eligible to sit for the national certification exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant- CMA (AAMA). Most employers require that applicants are certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants as a CMA(AAMA) to be eligible for hire after graduation.

Medical Assistants are a key component in keeping busy doctor’s offices and clinics running smoothly. They have a great amount of variety in their jobs and are cross-trained to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory duties. They are instrumental in making patients feel at ease. They have good communications skills, a caring manner, and enjoy working with people. They are uniquely qualified to serve as a liaison between the busy physician and patients.

At HCC, Medical Assisting students participate in a clinical practicum which provides practical experience in healthcare facilities, hospitals, and offices. They learn how to schedule appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, computer operations, assisting with exams and treatments, performing laboratory procedures, and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
