The graduating class of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts department will exhibit their best work at the 2012 Graduate Show held at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville beginning on Saturday, May 19 through September 2. A reception will be held on May 19 from 3 until 5 p.m. The Folk Art Center is open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
This year’s show has work in all four media of Clay, Jewelry, Fiber, and Wood. This exhibit marks the professional debut for many exhibiting craftspeople. The college makes involvement in the installation, organization, and publicity of this exhibit part of the coursework for HCC professional crafts students.
The HCC Professional Crafts Program is a two-year commitment, focusing on all aspects of becoming an independent craft professional. In addition to sharpening their technical and artistic skill in their chosen medium, students also create a marketable line of production work, plan a studio, and become familiar with the craft market. Mandatory coursework includes photography of finished pieces for gaining entrance into craft shows, creating a business plan, and designing and building a studio tailored to fit production needs.
