The same scenario frequently happens in Haywood Community College’s Continuing Education Quilting classes. The students come together to make a beautiful hand crafted quilt. That’s not the unusual part. What comes next is that the students start talking and decide their quilts can make a difference.

Current quilting students recently completed a class assignment where each one of them made a unique quilt square as a paper piecing project. The squares were all different and showcased the group’s creativity.  They decided to piece the blocks together and create a one-of-a-kind quilt. Instructor, Lani Hendrix quilted the pieced quilt.  The class is selling tickets to a drawing for the quilt of which 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House.

According to its website, the Ronald McDonald House program provides a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child who is seriously ill or injured at little or no cost.

These students not only learn how to make something beautiful with their hands, they also learn to give with their hearts.

Students will be at the next two Flea Markets at the Haywood County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 3 and Saturday, September 7 selling tickets. At noon on September 7, a drawing will be held to select the winner of the quilt. In addition, tickets may be purchased by calling 828-734-3848 or 828-565-4245. Tickets are $1 a piece or 6 for $5.

The next Beginning Quilting classes will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. from September 11 through January 15 or on Thursdays from 4 until 9 p.m. from September 12 through January 16 or on Fridays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. from September 13 through January 17.
