HCC Strengthens Ties Through Industry Training

Haywood Community College is strengthening ties to the community through industry training with the help of the college’s new Industry Training Coordinator Doug Burchfield. After 19 years at Borg Warner, he is very familiar with what happens in an industrial workplace and will draw on this knowledge to help the college as he acts as a liaison to local businesses and industries to determine their training needs.

Through Industry Training, there are two avenues open for training opportunities--customized training and continuing education courses.

HCC’s customized training services range from job profiling, pre-employment training and assessment, to post-hire technical and critical soft skills training. According to the North Carolina Community College System, the greatest asset that a community college has is flexibility. Because of the rapidly changing economic environment, innovation can mean the difference between a business’ success or failure.  The skills that industries require of their employees evolve more rapidly now than ever before. HCC can respond quickly to these training needs.

Customized training is offered to new, expanding and existing businesses and industries providing they meet the following criteria:  job growth, technology investment, and productivity enhancements. The training is funded by the state and free to qualified industries.

Burchfield will work not only with large corporations but also small businesses to determine if they qualify for this service. He will also meet with industry representatives to help determine the company’s training needs. For instance, if a company acquires a new piece of equipment that they need to train existing or new employees to operate, HCC can hire the instructor and set up a training schedule flexible enough to accommodate the employees’ work schedules.  It is Burchfield’s job to coordinate this and make sure that the college hires qualified instructors that can provide quality training. Specialized training such as IMPACT which teaches systematic trouble shooting and LEAN which focuses on operation skills and process improvement can also be coordinated through HCC.

It is the goal of the college, to help industries make a difference in their bottom line. HCC will provide or help find the best training opportunities.

The college can also provide training through continuing education courses and can tailor the instruction for a specific company’s needs.  Burchfield says, “In the future we  hope to offer more technology based continuing education courses and build a program well suited for industry training. “

The college also works closely with the Haywood County Economic Development Commission to attract new industry to the county.  “Anytime the county is recruiting a new industry, the college should be part of that effort. The first stop prospective employers make when they arrive in Haywood County should be to take a tour of the college,” Burchfield said.
