Haywood Community College’s Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society took third place overall competing against more than 20 colleges and universities at the 2013 Southeastern Wildlife Conclave hosted by North Carolina State University recently. Conclave is an annual event that brings over 450 wildlife management students, educators, and professionals together for three days of workshops, field tours, and spirited competition. HCC is one of two community colleges that competed at this year’s wildlife conclave. This is the 4th year in a row that the HCC wildlife students have finished in the top three overall.

HCC students compete against such schools as University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Auburn, LSU, and Mississippi State, including graduate students. Competitions at conclave include a challenging double-elimination Quiz Bowl tournament, a grueling outdoor Team Field competition, wildlife art and photography, game calling, and individual competitions such as radiotelemetry, obstacle course, archery, rifle, shotgun, orienteering, dendrology, canoeing, fly-casting, and lab practical. Points are awarded based upon final rank in each competition.

More than 20 HCC students earned the money to attend the Southeastern Wildlife Conclave by participating in chapter fundraisers including the Annual Wild Game Dinner and raffle ticket sales for a lifetime hunting and fishing license. Students were also supported by a mini-grant from the HCC Foundation.

As a team, HCC ranked first place overall in individual intellectual competitions and individual physical competitions. HCC finished 5th overall in the Team Field competition, 6th overall in wildlife art and photography, and 10th overall in Quiz Bowl.
