October is National Dyslexia Awareness month. Haywood Community College will host a free seminar, “Symptoms and Solutions for Dyslexia” at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium on Thursday, October 24.
One in five people are struggling readers. Dyslexia is characterized by difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension for people with normal intelligence. It is a learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read.
Recently, HCC Developmental Reading/English instructor, Gerry Kelly received a mini grant from the college’s Foundation to take courses from the Dyslexia Institute in San Diego to enhance her knowledge of dyslexia. She is now a dyslexia resource instructor for HCC faculty members. Kelly will share what she learned from this instruction to participants of the upcoming seminar.
