Armed with muscle, shovels and rakes, Haywood Community Learning Center (HCLC) students spent the afternoon preparing gardens and spaces for fruit trees at the back of Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains in Waynesville.

The church distributes healthy vegetables and fruits to supplement its food pantry, which is open to everyone in need. The church also prepares lunch for the HCLC once a month, so students feel obliged to help give back whatever they can.

"You guys made my day," said Mary Alice Lodico, one of the supervisors of the project. "I have never enjoyed an afternoon in the garden as much as with you polite, lively, energetic, adorable kids.

"You brought back great memories of teaching at Tuscola and Pisgah, and reminded me of why I like high schoolers so much."
