High-speed chases are risky

It’s a risky proposition when law enforcement officers are in hot pursuit of those attempting to elude them.

If the pursuit were on foot, it would be one thing. But when it happens in vehicles traveling at break-neck speeds, it is another story.

Excessive speed is always an issue in towns or heavily populated areas, but it is also a danger on winding mountain roads, which are plentiful in Haywood County.

While nobody wants to see someone attempting to avoid capture get away, it is also reasonable to expect law enforcement officers to “protect and defend” the broader population. There are definitely times when pursuing a fleeing suspect in a vehicle could be at cross-purposes with that mission, not to mention endangering the officer’s safety.
