Houston Melton Sr.
SYLVA — Houston Coleman Melton Sr.,72, of Sylva, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Jackson County, he was a Navy Seal from 1960 to 1961 during the Kennedy administration and a member of Little Savannah Baptist Church. Houston was the son of the late William Hershel and Denice Roberta Sutton Melton.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Stuart, and his wife, Estalee Keener Melton; and a sister in-law Ruby Young Melton.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Betty Lou Hannah Melton; one daughter, Patricia (Trish) Gail Melton, of Lake Junaluska; two sons, Michael Dan (Patricia Ann) Melton, of Hillsborough, and Houston Coleman Melton Jr. (Kimberly), of Brevard; one sister, Sandra Leigh (Bob) Burns, of Sylva; and one brother, Harold Dois Melton Sr., of Sylva, as well as a number of special nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday July 12, at Little Savannah Baptist Church with the Rev. Kent Lowdermilk and Dennis Burrell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Houston C. Melton Jr., Michael D. Melton, Philip Morris, Brian Hannah, Thad Hannah, Dois Melton, Robbie Hannah and Jeffery Ashe. Honorary pallbearer will be Joey Rathbone. Burial will follow in the Addie Cemetery.
