Howell Mill Road project awarded
RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to widen and improve Howell Mill Road from U.S. 276 to U.S. 23 Business in Waynesville.
The $11.7 million contract was awarded to Mountain Creek Contractors of Catawba. Work can begin as early asMarch 15, 2014, and is scheduled for completion by Oct. 15, 2016.
As part of the project, Howell Mill Road will be widened to two 14-foot lanes with a 12-foot center turning lane. A five-foot sidewalk will be constructed on the east side of the road, and a roundabout will be constructed at Vance Street.
This project is an important investment in the long term viability of the state’s transportation network and will help improve the overall health of the local infrastructure.
This was one of 22 contracts worth $76.5 million awarded by NCDOT on the latest list of projects for roads and bridges across the state. They were awarded to the lowest qualified bidder, as required by state law. The winning bids came in $3.5 million, about 4.4 percent, under DOT engineers' estimates.
