Hubert G. Walker
WAYNESVILLE — Hubert Gray Walker, 78, died on Saturday, Feb.15, 2014, at The Homestead.
Born and reared in the Letitia Community in Cherokee County, NC, he had resided in Haywood County, NC since 1966. He was a son of the late William Clarence Walker and the late Mertie Taylor Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vaud Walker Foster; brothers, Archie, Hoyt, Don and Olen Walker; also an infant son, Jonathan Gray Walker.
He was a 1953 graduate of Murphy High School, Murphy, NC, and a 1961 graduate of Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas. Prior to entering mortuary college, he served his apprenticeship with Morris Funeral Home of Asheville. A licensed funeral director and embalmer, he for many years was co-owner of Crawford Funeral Home in Waynesville. He used his profession as a calling to serve the public. Countless families and individuals were the recipients of his endless devotion to meet the needs of the grieving. Many have been blessed by his faithful service.
A United States Navy Veteran of the Korean War, he served in the South Pacific on the USS Foss DE-59. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, having served on the Board of Deacons.
As we remember Hubert Gray Walker, we remember the sound of his infectious laugh, his wonderful sense of humor and his true compassion for caring for others. He was the example of a true professional and a consummate gentleman.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Loretta Voyles Walker of the home; his son, Thomas Gray Walker of Raleigh and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Waynesville with the Revs. Dr. Robert Prince and John Daniels officiating. The family will receive friends in the church chapel immediately following the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Green Hill Cemetery.
