WAYNESVILLE — Hugh Messer, 84, of Waynesville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at The Homestead at MedWest-Haywood.
Mr. Messer was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Haywood County to the late Glen Messer and the late Bonnie Hall Messer. He was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and retired from Lea Industries in Waynesville. Mr. Messer was also the owner and operator of Hemphill Mountain Campground and Stables for many years. Hugh loved his horses and sheep and he had true compassion for all animals. He shall be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer, Charlie, Bill and Lewis Messer; and a sister, Edith Messer Woods.
Surviving are his children, Vickie Messer Cagle, and her husband, Rodger A. Cagle, Kenneth N. Messer, and his wife, Wilda C. Messer, and Jerry H. Messer, and his wife, Emmy S. Messer, all of Waynesville; grandchildren, Christine H. Kersnowski, and her husband, Sean A. Kersnowski, Kendra A. Messer, and her husband, Dan Messer, Dalton D. Messer, and Boone A. Messer, all of Waynesville; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Messer, and his wife, Lynn Messer, and Everett Messer and his wife, Nina, all of Waynesville; sisters, Carrie M. Sutton and Glennie M. Sutton, and her husband, Joe Sutton, all of Waynesville.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Rogers officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville.
