Interested in keeping chickens?
Interested in keeping chickens? Join author Ashley English at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at the Canton Branch Library to learn all about raising chickens. English is the author of several books on a variety of small-scale homesteading topics, including "Keeping Chickens" (2010, Lark Books).
More and more people are interested in keeping chickens because they are relatively simple and inexpensive to maintain, and not only can they provide fresh eggs, but they can also help with bug and weed control, and they manufacture fertilizer.
Attend this program to find out what to consider beforehand (how much it will cost, the space that is needed, how much time it takes to maintain a flock, etc.). In addition, learn how to select a breed; how to obtain birds and when; how to properly house and feed chickens; and more.
Program participants will receive instructions on how to care for chickens, a list of breeds and a list of resources, including poultry websites and contact information for hatcheries and suppliers, as well as a chicken care checklist. Books by English will be available for purchase.
This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and is free and open to all. For more information, call 648-2924.
