WAYNESVILLE — Irene Smith King, our beloved mother and grandmother, 77, of Opal Court, passed away into the arms of the angels on Friday, March 28, 2014.
Mrs. King was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Haywood County to the late Vincent Winfield Smith and the late Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rathbone Smith. She was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and a truly dedicated homemaker. Irene was a member of Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church. Irene enjoyed spending time outdoors and could often be found working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She touched all of her family and neighbors with her genuine kindness and giving spirit — she was always caring for others. A wonderful mother and grandmother, she will be remembered as “the best babysitter in the whole world” and those precious memories shall be cherished forever. Irene Smith King was a lady who touched many lives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess King, who passed away in 2002; a brother, Roy Smith; and her sisters, Mae Inman, Myrtle King and Beulah Chambers.
Surviving are her children, Edward King of Maggie Valley/ Ft. Myers, Florida; Wilma Henson, and her husband, Wentfard Henson, of Waynesville, Burlin “Plug” King, of Waynesville and Christy McCracken, and her husband, Michael McCracken, of Clyde; grandchildren, Alicia Creasman, Jacob and Lucas McCracken; great-grandchildren, Kloe and Makenna Creasman; a brother, Wayne Smith, of Canton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Cayton will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Newfound Road in Canton.
