J. Creek Cloggers get ready for season
The J. Creek Cloggers announce the upcoming schedule for 2013, stating the troupe has been selected to perform at the Stompin Grounds in Maggie Valley, which will open in May, along with various festivals and benefits throughout N.C., Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and other states.
The J. Creek Cloggers are a high-energy dance team based in Haywood County, that is keeping the mountain tradition alive of clogging, audience participation square dances and broom dances. Members demonstrate different styles of dance including buck dancing, flat-footing and clogging, performing to traditional bluegrass music.
Since forming more than years ago, the J. Creek Cloggers have performed in various states.
“The team may be in its third year, but most of the team members have been dancing since they were little,” said director Kim Ross.
The caller of the group, Terry Woody, has danced throughout the United States and England and has more than 30 years of experience.
The exhibition team consists of 18 members ranging in age from 13 to 56. The team prides itself on having young people clogging, which in turn continues to keep this tradition alive.
“The whole team works as a family unit which makes our team very unique,” said Ross.
The J. Creek Cloggers will perform at many festivals and benefits including The Stompin Grounds; KARM Campout in Knoxville, Tennessee; Pickin' In The Park, Canton; the Lifestyle Celebration, in Waynesville; Rutherford County Union Mills Learning Center in May; Folkmoot July 26, at Stompin Grounds; Folkmoot International Day; Diana Wortham Mountain Dance & Folk Festival; Labor Day Canton; Folk Art Center in Asheville; North Carolina Mountain State Fair; Haywood County Fair, and Hendersonville Street Dances. The troupe also performed at the Historic Carter Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, home to Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter Family last year.
