Jake D. Burrell Sr.

CANTON — Jake D. Burrell Sr., 78, of Canton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Homestead at MedWest in Clyde.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Larry and Gladys Murray Burrell.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Joann Stamey Burrell, and a grandson, Bobby Burrell.

Mr. Burrell proudly served in the U.S. Army, and retired from Champion International Paper after 40 years of service.  He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and was a past member of the Y's Men Club, Greenville Bulldog Club, and the Bulldog Club of America.  He was also a member of Rockwood United Methodist Church in Canton.

Surviving are his sons, Jake Denver Burrell Jr., and wife, Gail, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Jeff Burrell, of Canton; sister, Jane Shipman and husband, Riley, of Canton; niece, Tammy Shipman; nephew, Larry Shipman; and great nephew, Michael.

A gathering to celebrate Mr. Burrell's life will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Rockwood United Methodist Church.
