Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother

CANTON — Sylvia Jean O’Diear Sharpe, 75, of the Center Pigeon community in Canton went home to be with Jesus Saturday, March 16, 2013.

Mrs. Sharpe was born July 23, 1937, in Swain County to the late Theodore O’Diear and the late Martha Watkins O’Diear.  She moved to Haywood County in 1949 to make her home and was a member of the Bethel High School graduating class of 1957. Jean was a devoted homemaker and a talented quilter. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and cherished the time that she spent with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Sharpe was a dedicated and active member of Center Pigeon Baptist Church. She was a wonderful cook and always enjoyed preparing meals for her church and for visiting missionaries. Jean will be deeply missed by her family and friends and will remain a part of each of them forever.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Edward O’Diear.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, William Sharpe; sons, Michael Sharpe, and  his wife, Karen Sharpe, of Orange City, Florida, and David Sharpe, and his fiancee,’ Leah Anglin, of the home; daughters, Sandra Epley, and her husband, Ron Epley, of Canton, and Sharon Sharpe, of the home; grandsons she was helping raise, Kohl and Jackson Sharpe, of the home, and two other grandsons who she helped raise, Dusty Penland, and his wife, Cheyene Penland, of Woodruff, South Carolina, and Sammy Penland, and his wife, Heather Penland, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; a sister, Austine Jones, and her husband, Claude Jones, of Darrington, Washington; she was also blessed with nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three nephews and two nieces.

The funeral service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19,  at Center Pigeon Baptist Church. The Revs. Allen Blanton, Bud Lance,  Furman Wilson and Steve Rhinehart  officiated.  The family  received friends Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. At other times the family will be at the home, 523 Scottdale Road, Canton.  A graveside interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Center Pigeon Baptist Church Cemetery.
