In Loving Memory
CANTON — Jessie Theodore Downes, 82, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at his residence.
He was born in Macon County and had resided most of his life in Buncombe County and in Haywood County for 2-and-a-half years. He was the son of the late Jessie Ballard and Beulah Mae Brendle Downes, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Downes. He joined the military at the age of 17 and served for 13-and-a-half years in all four branches as a nurse/medic during the China evacuation and Korean Conflict. While in the military, he earned his education and nursing credentials. He retired from Kinco Corporation, with 40 years of service and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church. Jess was a talented carpenter and enjoyed making furniture and cabinetry. He was known for his dedicated work ethic and generosity he showed toward others.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jewel Pitts Downes; a son, Ed Downes, of Canton; a sister-in-law, Peggy Murphy, of Orangeburg, South Carolina; two foster sisters, Joyce Meadows, of Midway, Tennessee, and Sue Sams, of Candler; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Plains United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ryan C. Snider and Garnett Pitts officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
