In Loving Memory
CANTON — John Lester Lewis, 85, of Northridge Drive, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.
Mr. Lewis was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Macon County, North Carolina to the late James Lester Lewis and the late Beulah Nichols Lewis. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Cambria. John had resided in Newport News, Virginia, where he retired in 1989, with 37 years of dedicated service from the Newport News Shipyard, and upon his retirement relocated to Haywood County to make his home. Mr. Lewis was of the Baptist faith. He was a former member of the Newport News Moose Lodge and the Waynesville VFW Post # 5202. He loved the mountains that he had chosen to call his home and he also was an avid golfer. John will always be remembered as a “man who did it his way.” He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Lewis; a daughter, Vivia Lewis; a sister, Rachel Perry; and his brothers, Gordon and Frank Lewis.
Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Grace Parker Lewis; a son, John Calvin Lewis, of Canton; grandchildren, Ian, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Kimberly and Angela; six great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons; a brother, Luther Lewis, and his wife, Anne of Tampa, Florida; many nieces and nephews that loved him dearly; and also his special dog, “Molly.”
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial with military honors will be in Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Newfound Road.
