Join the Downtown Dog Walk fun Aug. 2
Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation will hold its Annual Downtown Dog Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in downtown Waynesville. This fundraiser supporting the dogs and cats of Haywood County is a much-loved community event. Last year’s dog walk was a big success, bringing more than 200 dogs and their families to walk down Waynesville’s Main Street.
Even the Sarge’s foster dogs waiting for homes were able to participate in the walk last year through “virtual walker” sponsorships and the help of volunteers.
“Please help us make this ninth annual Dog Walk the biggest ever and support our efforts to find homes for our county’s healthy, adoptable cats and dogs,” said Marita Scholtz, co-chairman of the event.
The Downtown Dog Walk is one of Sarge’s biggest fundraisers of the year. In addition to being a fun community event, donations raised by individuals and partner teams help pay for boarding, spay/neuter, transport to other rescue groups and medical supplies for the pets rescued from the county animal control facility.
The walk begins and ends at Haywood County Courthouse on Main Street in Waynesville. Following the dog walk, there will be music, contests and a good time with everyone on Main Street. Jeanne Naber of Songbug DJ Services will keep the music and fun moving, while 99.9 Kiss Country personalities Eddie Foxx and Sharon Green will return as contest judges and will be available to greet their fans.
Dog walkers may sign up one of the following ways:
• Fill out registration forms online at www.sargeandfriends.org,
• Attend pre-registration between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 31 or Friday, Aug. 1 at Sarge’s Adoption Center at 256 Industrial Park Dr., Waynesville.
• Pick up registration forms at local area animal hospitals in Waynesville, Clyde and Canton or at Sarge’s Adoption Center
• Sign up starting at 9 a.m. the day of the walk outside the Haywood County Courthouse.
There is a $15 fee for each dog walking in the event. This fee includes a dog walk goody bag and dog bandana.
Registration forms also include an important Partners’ Pledge Form that allows walkers to gather additional donations from friends and family.
“Each dollar collected in your pet’s name helps save more lives,” said co-chair Corrine Baker.”
In order to receive a free official 2014 Downtown Dog Walk T-Shirt, registered walkers will need to have collected at least an additional $15 in “partner” money. T-shirts will also be on sale at pre-registration and at the dog walk. There will be prizes for the people collecting the most money with their “teams” on the Partner Pledge form.
“If you can’t join in that day, you can still help,” Baker said. “Sign up to be a virtual walker. Sponsor a Sarge’s foster dog for $15 and we’ll have one of our volunteers walk a foster dog for you. What a treat for a dog that would otherwise miss all the fun. Who knows — a dog you sponsor might meet their new family during the parade.”
