Post 47 Athletic Director Larry Harbin  announced on Friday tryouts for the first-ever junior legion (17-and-under) team have been set from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays May 10 and 17, at the Tuscola Ballpark, which is next to Junaluska Elementary School.

The Haywood Post 47 Doughboys will be managed by Eryk McConnell and assisted by Smoky Mountain coach Derek Hawk.

McConnell pitched four years at N.C. State University and three years in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization.

In order to play for the team, ballplayers must be current freshmen, sophomores or juniors and can tryout as long as they don’t turn 18 before Aug. 11.

The team is primarily open for players that attend Tuscola, Pisgah, Smoky Mountain, Cherokee and Swain County high schools.

The season starts the first week of June and goes through the end of July.
