Maggie Valley — Haywood County’s premiere junior golf tournament was held earlier this week at Maggie Valley Club and Resort.
It was a milestone for the Jane Marville Junior Golf Tournament, as long-time Maggie Valley Club members, Ted and Jane Marville, celebrated their 25th year hosting this wonderful golf event.
Some 55 young golfers, ages 7-17, competed for trophies and bragging rights during the two-day tournament; and golfers, parents, grandparents, marshals, volunteers and coaches alike, all enjoyed the welcome break in the weather.
It was the first, two consecutive days without rain in weeks, and a sight to behold as the golf course teamed with young, accomplished golfers.
At the end of the two days, all golfers, regardless of age, can call themselves winners — as the future of golf is in good hands.
The Marvilles have contributed greatly to this cause, and Jane Marville takes pride that “Several former tournament players have stayed with a golf career or gone on to play on college teams.”
The modest Marvilles won’t take credit for their years of contributing so freely of their time and talent. They consider the Jane Marville Junior Golf Championship a Maggie Valley Club members’ event. After all, “It’s all the members that contribute time and money to make it a success,” Jane said.
To everyone’s credit, both boys and girls winners in the 15-17 year-old category scored under par totals of 143 for 36 holes.
Low score for the 13-14 year olds was Joshah Rager, with a 36-hole total of 147.
Low score for younger boys and girls, ages 7-12 was Colt Ingram with a 2-day, 18-hole total of 77.
