Kathryn 'Kay' Elizabeth Holer
“Battle of the Bulge Evacuation Nurse”
WAYNESVILLE — Kathryn “Kay” Elizabeth Holer, 92, of Waynesville, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, Feb.15, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota on Nov. 8, 1921 to the late Carl Rudolph and Ella Christine Pierson Nordgren. She courageously served as a US Army nurse with the 105 evacuation hospital during WWII in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. She served in the European Theatre for 18 months. She was a volunteer for 25 years at Haywood Christian Ministry and Haywood County Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the American Legion Post 75 in Delphi, Indiana, the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, and Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Waynesville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Henry Holer; son, Henry Rand Holer; and a brother, Russell Nordgren.
Survivors include, daughters, Linda Alexander of Waynesville, Lucy Weyls and her husband, David of Noblesville, Indiana; daughter in law, Myra Holer of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Mary Holer and husband, Jacob Isleib, Melissa H. Hummel and husband, Michael, Alexis W. Linn and husband, Alex, Zachary Weyls and wife, Erika; five great grandchildren, and a nephew, Mike Nordgren.
A memorial service celebrating Kay’s life will be held at a later date.
