Ken Zulla to discuss dahlias Sept. 16

By Sally Jones | Sep 02, 2014
Native to Mexico, the Dahlia is Mexico's national flower.

Tuscola Garden Club will begin a new season of gardening fun and learning with a meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Bethea Welcome Center at Lake Junaluska.

Ken Zulla, a Lake Junaluska resident, will present a program called "Dahlia Grower by Default."  Zulla has been a member of the Carolinas Dahlia Society for 11 years and  was chairperson for last year’s Annual Dahlia Show in Asheville.  Since he began his hobby, he has won many awards and honors as a grower and shower of dahlias.  Zulla was also recently awarded the 2014 Chief Junaluska Award for his many years of service to benefit and enhance the Lake Junaluska community.

Dahlias, which are grown from tubers, are native to Mexico, and Central and South America. Their blooms vary greatly with some as large as dinner plates. They come in every color of the rainbow and many new varieties are hybridized every year.

Those who love dahlias are welcome to come and experience the stories and wisdom  Zulla has to share about his adventures with these amazing flowers. Visitors are welcome.
