Haywood Waterways Association will conduct its annual Kids in the Creek program for Haywood County eighth grade public school students Monday, September 17 through Wednesday, September 19, 2012. The event will start daily at 8:30 A.M. and run until 2:30 P.M. at the Canton Recreation Park. With over 600 students, plus teachers and local and regional instructors, Kids in the Creek is a one-of-a-kind program in Haywood County. Volunteers will receive a Kids in the Creek t-shirt featuring this year’s original, student-art design, as well as snacks and water. Laughs, all the fun and energy you can handle, and plenty of opportunities to make a difference are included.

Kids in the Creek is Haywood Waterway’s most important education program. It is a hands-on investigation of water quality where students rotate through four stations: fish, benthic (bottom dwelling) insects, water chemistry and the Enviroscape watershed demonstration. Students learn about a variety of methods to evaluate water quality and the ecological interactions that occur within a watershed.

We invite the public to attend this one-of-a-kind learning experience. Bethel Middle School students are scheduled for Monday morning. Canton students are scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Waynesville Middle School students are scheduled for afternoons on Monday through Wednesday. If you can make it, come on out to support the students from your school! If you have any questions, please call Jane Falkenstein at 452-7713 for additional information or write to jfalken@earthlink.net.
