Kiwanis installs new officers, reflects on year
The 63rd annual installation banquet of the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville was held at the Lambuth Inn last month, and retiring President Mike Simonson thanked the club for allowing him to serve as president during an important year.
This year, the club distributed unrestricted grants totaling $6,831, made possible by the support of the community through the annual barbecue and spelling bee fundraisers. The club also distributed $24,100 in Scott grants, the result of a fund established by the late Jim and Betty Scott. Jim Scott was a long time member of the club.
The Club was also involved in many projects to benefit children and handicapped adults, including the Kiwanis family fun day held in partnership with the Waynesville Recreation Center; the dictionary project that presented dictionaries to every third grade student in the nine Haywood County elementary schools; the BUG program at Clyde Elementary School that rewards students for bringing up their grades; sponsorship of the Key Clubs at Pisgah and Tuscola High Schools and the Aktion Club of Waynesville for handicapped adults; and the Waynesville Christmas Parade co-sponsored with the Downtown Waynesville Association.
Division 1 Lt. Gov. Jim Wagoner, a member of the Waynesville Club, installed the following officers and directors for the 2013-14 administrative year that began Oct. 1: John Franco, president; Sam Crain, president-elect; Marti Peithman, vice president; Dick Antross, treasurer; Judith Antross, secretary; Mike Simonson, immediate past president; and Bill Daniels, Jane Daniels, Carol Hall, Gerald Jacobson, Ann Kline, Bob Miles, Walter Miles and Nancy O’Heir were installed as directors.
Judith Antross, having met the stringent criteria required, was chosen by her club members as the Kiwanian of the Year. Antross was involved in many projects, worked with the Aktion Club, served as special events chair and currently serves as secretary.
The Kiwanis Club of Waynesville gathers for lunch and a program at 11:30 on Tuesdays at the Laurel Ridge Country Club. For more information, call Anne Kline at 235-3010 or Jackey Webb at 400-5621.
