On Feb. 19, Dick Antross, treasuer, and Judith Antross, secretary, of the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville, presented a commemorative plaque to Karen Owens, president of STAR Ranch, for the door of their barn classroom.

Last year the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville awarded $1000 to STAR Ranch to complete their classroom project. Hundreds of students now visit STAR Ranch each year and utilize the classroom as part of their introduction to horses, horse care and stories about the last 65 horses to come to the ranch. After a classroom orientation, the students interact with several of the STAR horses, often mucking stalls, painting fences and grooming, as well as feeding a few apples and carrots to the horses.

Past visitors include the Action Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville; SOAR, a special group of students from all over the U.S.; church groups through Lake Junaluska summer camps; and many local organizations seeking to share some time with the rescued horses.
