The Father Michael Murphy Council of the Knights of Columbus from St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Maggie Valley and the St. John’s Council of the Knights of Columbus in Waynesville each made donations to the Haywood County Special Olympics and The Arc of Haywood County. The checks were presented at the annual Special Olympics volunteer and athlete luncheon held in December.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic charitable society that promotes charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. The donations are proceeds from the L.A.M.B. drive where the Knights hand out tootsie rolls in several area locations over the course of the year. The L.A.M.B. drive, which raises funds specifically for agencies that provide services and programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, stands for the “Least Among My Brothers.” This additional funding is crucial to the operation of both The Arc and Special Olympics.

“We are so fortunate that the Knights of Columbus has a focus on individuals with developmental disabilities and that our local councils have chosen to support both Special Olympics and The Arc,” said Denise Coleman, executive director of The Arc.
