Lake Junaluska Summer Worship Series continues with Rev. Dr. Dan Matthews July 8

The Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center Summer Worship Series will continue on Sunday, July 8, 2012.  The Rev. Dr. Daniel Paul Matthews, rector emeritus of historic Trinity Church, Wall Street, will preach at Stuart Auditorium at the 10:45 service.

 

Dr. Matthews graduated from high school in Canton, NC.  He spent the first 20 years of his ministry as a priest in parishes in Tennessee.

 

Since 1972, Dr. Matthews’ work has been concentrated in larger, inner-city parishes, beginning with St. John’s in Knoxville. TN.  In1980. Dr. Matthews was called to St. Luke’s in downtown Atlanta, then in 1987 to 300-year-old Trinity Church, Wall Street, where he served for 17 years.  Following 9/11, Trinity’s Chapel, St. Paul’s – across the street from the World Trade Center – served as a 24-hour center of refuge and relief for 8 months.

 

Dr. Matthews’ “leadership has been recognized by four honorary doctorates.”  He has preached throughout the United States as well as in Canterbury Cathedral in England and in Nanjing Seminary in China.  In retirement, Dr. Matthews and his wife live in Manhattan.  He co-chairs the development committee at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.

 

Each Sunday through August 12, three worship services are planned as part of the Summer Worship Series: a service of Word and Table at 8:30 a.m. in Memorial Chapel, a Praise and Prayer Service at the Lake Junaluska Cross Amphitheater at 9:30 a.m., and at 10:45 a.m., Morning Worship at Stuart Auditorium featuring a variety of well-known preachers from across the country. The Lake Junaluska Singers provide special music during the 10:45 service at Stuart.
