CANTON — The Franklin at Pisgah varsity girls basketball game is going to be a sellout in Canton tonight.
But it’s hard to imagine that the WNC Athletic Conference showdown between the 14-2 Panthers and the 14-1 Black Bears has taken a backseat to the news of the individual state wrestling rankings from the website RetroRankings.com.
On Wednesday, Pisgah senior Cody Lamb rose from the No. 3 spot to the website’s No. 1 heavyweight wrestler in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 3-A classification.
“Since I have been head coach at Pisgah, Cody is my first wrestler to be ranked No. 1,” said Pisgah Head Coach Ryan Gibson. “A few years back, Travis Smalling was ranked No. 2. I am happy for him, because he deserves to be ranked No. 1. He has beaten three North Carolina Top 10 wrestlers this season.”
Lamb currently sports an impressive 29-1 overall record with 26 pins as a heavyweight, which begins at 285-pounds. His only loss came days after the football season concluded.  But what is more impressive about Lamb’s top-ranking is he only weighs 245 pounds and typically gives up at least 40 pounds every match.
“Cody has wrestled extremely well this season and he works so hard at practice,” said Gibson. “He is a very special young man and a special wrestler to coach. But Cody also knows being ranked No. 1 also puts a bullseye on his chest.”
