Laura Leatherwood to head hospital foundation
Waynesville, N.C. – The HRMC Foundation Board of Trustees recently appointed community leader Laura Leatherwood as the new chairman of the board.
Leatherwood is the Vice President of Student and Workforce Development at Haywood Community College, where she has worked since 2000. In addition to her new position on the HRMC Foundation board, Leatherwood serves on the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, WCU College of Business Advisory Board, WCU Catamount Club Board of Directors, previously served on the Board of Directors for Leadership NC, and has held several statewide leadership positions within the North Carolina community college system. She and her husband Ron Leatherwood of Clark & Leatherwood reside in Waynesville.
Leatherwood has a vested interest in MedWest-Haywood, and has served as a hospital ambassador to the community during recent years. Having assisted with the opening of the MedWest Health and Fitness Center, which was funded primarily through the HRMC Foundation, Leatherwood looks forward to the Foundation’s role in future updates to the facility. She also served on the Community Relations Council during the hospital’s decertification in 2008.
“The fact that we have a good local hospital not only helps us attract business, but it also helps attract retirees and second home owners to the area,” said Leatherwood. “These are two critical components needed to have a diverse and strong economy in Haywood County.”
The HRMC Foundation has played a critical role in funding scholarships for nurses, grants for technologically-advanced equipment, and professional development for employees. The Foundation also generously helped fund The Homestead, MedWest’s new inpatient hospice care facility, and the Outpatient Care Center, both of which opened in 2012.
The Annual Foundation Golf and Gala event, held in August of 2012, garnered over $140,000, part of which will go toward the proposed Hospice and Palliative Care Outreach Center, which will provide an area for hospice staff and clergy to collaboratively manage patient care and family support. Leatherwood and her husband, Ron, have served as chairs for the Golf and Gala for two years.
The HRMC Foundation’s goal is to promote and administer charitable gifts for the advancement of MedWest-Haywood, and to assist in providing the highest quality healthcare for our community. Gifts and donations to the Foundation are gratefully accepted by mail at 262 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
