Learn about the environment

For parents who would like an environmental learning experience to be part of their child's summer camp, there's still time to sign up for the YES Camp, which begins June 25 and lasts one week.

The camp, sponsored by Haywood Soil and Water Conservation District, is designed to complement school curriculum for rising 8th and 9th graders. It lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the cost is $25.

The camp's focus is nature and the environment.

Former camper Allie Dinwiddie gave the camp high marks.

"I was pleasantly surprised how much this camp exceeded my expectations," she said. "I absorbed many facts about the environment (tree zapper balsam wooly adelgids, destructive wild boars, how to identify trees by their leaf shape) as well as information about the economics behind using nature for ...
