Learn Country and Western Progressive SwingNew dance class comes to Waynesville Rec
The Waynesville Rec Center is starting off a new year with a brand new dance. Starting Jan. 7, the center will be offering classes in Country and Western Progressive Swing. For Level 1, the classes will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28, and Feb. 4 and 11, with duplicate classes on Friday nights.
Country and Western Progressive Swing is a new dance that has recently been designed by the Arthur Murray studios in Los Angeles. It is a very smooth and classy country dance. It will be taught by Herb and Sally Roach, who are certified Arthur Murray instructors who have reached the Gold level in 10 dances and have been teaching dance for more than 20 years.
After retiring from the New Orleans school system after 27 years, they took a cruise which unexpectedly opened up a new chapter in their lives. While dancing together aboard the ship one evening, they were spotted by the cruise director, who asked if they would like to sign on the teach dancing on more cruises. They signed a contract with Princess Cruise Lines to teach on their month-long cruises, which led to teaching six months a year as their American Dance Team.
Finally, after seven years at sea, they decided to retire a second time and move to the mountains of North Carolina, which they had always loved. They couldn’t retire from dancing, though, and started teaching dancing again in Waynesville (third career) at the rec center.
“Anyone can learn to dance,” said Herb. “The students can gain confidence, have fun, and spend time doing something together.”
