Lennane powers Post 47 past HickoryDH belts two HRs, rips three singles, drives in eight runs
From Little League through high school baseball, Zach Lennane (Tuscola) couldn’t remember if he ever had a day at the plate like he had Monday night.
However, he will certainly never forget his game against visiting Hickory Post 48.
With several college coaches in attendance, Lennane crushed a pair of three-run home runs, ripped three singles, scored four runs and drove in eight runs in powering Haywood Post 47 past Hickory, 17-4, in a seven inning Area IV West Division senior legion game at Tuscola Ballpark Monday night.
“Batting gloves,” laughed Lennane. “I decided not to wear batting gloves. Hey, that’s all I got.”
The Dragoons improved to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in the Area IV West Division, while Hickory fell to 4-7 in the West and 6-7 overall.
Lennane’s 5-for-5 night at the plate raised his batting average 89 points from .355 to .444 this season. He also has belted three homers in his last two games.
In Lennane’s first at bat in the first inning, he crushed a three-run homer down the left field line that was estimated to have traveled 410-feet. His second three-run round-tripper was a rocket to right field that left the ballpark in a hurry in the sixth inning.
The 17 runs scored by the Dragoons was their highest offensive output this season and manager Caleb McConnell’s senior legion ballclub finished with 20 hits.
Matthew Duverge (Rabun Gap), Gerrio Rahming (Rabun Gap) and Nathan Summey (Pisgah) had three hits each, while Pepe Payero (Rabun Gap), Thomas Tatham (Pisgah) and Lancelot Edwards (Rabun Gap) had two hits each.
Rahming was a triple shy of the cycle with five RBI. He cracked an impressive two-run home run in a six run fourth inning. Summey and Tatham had an RBI double each.
Haywood Post 47 pitcher Forrest Kerslake (Tuscola) picked up his first win of the season. The 6-for-3 lefty started and went 6.2 innings, gave up seven hits and struck out five before running out of gas in the top of the seventh.
Chance Roberts (Hiwassee Dam) relieved Kerslake and got the final out when he struck out Nathan Fleming with the bases loaded.
Haywood Post 47 scored three runs in the first, a pair of runs in the second, six in the fourth, two in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.
The Dragoons played Henderson County Post 77 Tuesday night in a non-Area IV West Division game at Tuscola Ballpark. No results were available at press time. McConnell’s club will be off until Saturday, June 21, when they host at 7:05 p.m. Henderson County Post 77 for a West Division game at the friendly confines of Tuscola Ballpark. Haywood Post 47 will travel to Shelby on Sunday, June 22, to the home of the American Legion World Series, to play a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Post 82.
