Lens Luggers, the photo group of Western North Carolina, will begin meeting the first Thursday of each month at 6 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 566 S. Haywood St., Room 102. The first meeting is Feb. 6. The public is invited. It’s a great opportunity to pick up some photo tips and find out which kind of camera and lenses produce the kind of images you want.
Lens Luggers are novice and advanced photographers who have attended field photography programs by Bob Grytten. This forum is different from a Camera Club, in that it is less formal and provides an opportunity for members to show their images using a digital projector at every meeting and take away feedback from the following discussions. Each meeting opens with a Q&A session and discussion by all members, thereby creating really good synergism.
This is a continuing education program designed for photographers by photographers. Part of their mission is to assist teens and students to hone their skills in the natural setting of Western North Carolina. This interest carries forward to travel opportunities in foreign countries and foster greater understanding of other cultures. Some possible trips include Costa Rica, Italy, and France.
Memberships are not required to attend the Thursday meetings; however, they are available without attending a Field Workshop. Members receive 30% workshop discounts. Also, a portion of the Lens Lugger membership fee can be used to offset the membership of any formal camera club of their choice. Formal camera club memberships are encouraged as they usually provide speakers and monthly field trips. Three groups are active in this area as of this writing. Carolina Nature Photography Association, http://www.cnpa.org/, offers regional meetings in Asheville. Cold Mountain Photographic Society, http://cmpsnc.org/, meets the Second Monday of the month at the Med West Rec Center, and another in Sylva.
