Lile resets own record

Waynesville resident and former SMAC standout resets GWU 400 IM and 200 free records at Wingate Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE — Gardner-Webb sophomore Nathan Lile reset his own school record in the men’s 400 IM, while adding a school record performance while leading off the 800 free relay on day two of the 2013 Wingate Fall Frenzy.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs rallied for a fourth place finish, accumulating 877 points in the three-day weekend meet.
Lile, who was homeschooled and resides in Waynesville, continued his impressive meet in the finals of the 400 IM, moving up to place fourth in 3:59.67, the fastest 400 IM time in Gardner-Webb history. The sophomore moved up while swimming in lane one after earning the seventh seed in prelims.
Leading off the men’s 800 free relay, the former Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club standout wowed the crowd by putting his team out in front in a school record 200 free time of 1:39.95, propelling GWU’s ‘A’ relay to a fifth place finish in 6:58.99.
Lile’s 200 free time represented the fastest of the meet. Hayden Kosater of Queens won the event earlier in the night with a time of 1:40.57.
In addition, the Gardner-Webb men opened their finals session in the men’s 200 medley relay, taking fifth place behind a time of 1:33.88 Connor Bos (23.77), Brandon Searle (26.48), Lile (22.47), and Cole Hickey (21.08) teamed up for the top five finish.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs finished up Saturday night in strong fashion as well, taking fifth place in the 800 free relay from the combination of Lile (1:39.95), Dyer (1:45.19), McKay (1:47.34), and Watts (1:46.51). The four 200 freestylers combined for a time of 6:58.99 in the event.
On the final day of competition in the men’s 200 backstroke, Lile finished ninth with a season best time of 1:49.95. In the men’s 200 fly, he raced to a season best and Top 10 performance (ninth) for the fourth time at the Frenzy with a season best time of 1:51.68.
Gardner-Webb swimming transitions into winter break with its midseason taper meet now in the rearview mirror. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ travel to the USA Swimming Winter Nationals, held Dec. 5-7 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
