The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 248 was recently recognized for its achievements in the 2013 NALC food drive held earlier this year, placing first in the region and fourth nationwide in Category 7 (200 to 349 members). Haywood County residents assisted the NALC in collecting 312,097 pounds of food. Food gathered locally was used to meet the needs of residents through food distribution agencies in the county, including Haywood Christian Ministry, the Salvation Army, Open Door and the Community Kitchen.

Nationwide, more than 1,500 Association of Letter Carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns collected food for the drive, which was held in May. More than 74.4 million pounds of food was collected overall, which will help restock food banks, pantries and shelters around the country.
