Long-time cattleman Terry Rogers honored
At an annual dinner for the WNC Beef Cattle Commission, Terry Rogers from Haywood County, was presented with the Happy Hollow Award.
This award has been presented by the WNC Beef Cattle Commission every year since 1986 to a WNC BCC Member. The Happy Hollow Award recognizes outstanding efforts to promote and support the beef cattle industry.
Past recipients of the award meet in November to determine who the next recipient will be based upon their involvement in WNC Beef Cattle Commission activities over the years. The award was presented to Rogers by cattlemanTom Harvey.
Rogers is a member of the NC Cattleman’s Association, WNC Beef Cattle Commission and Board Member of the Haywood County Cattlemen’s Association. He is an advocate for farm safety and has sponsored farm safety programs with the local fire and rescue departments, as well as promoted farm safety through Haywood County Farm Bureau during the Annual Hay Field Day at the Mountain Research Station.
Rogers has been instrumental in agriculture education chairing Haywood’s Agriculture Career Day, selecting youth to attend the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders and serving on the Haywood County Cattlemen’s Association’s Scholarship Committee.
Agriculture education is extremely important to Rogers, and in the forefront of his mind.
“This is a great honor," Rogers said upon receiving the award. "We all need to make sure today’s kids are learning about agriculture or in the future they will starve.”
The award is began Transylvania County in the 1980s when Transylvania Cattlemen invited producers from the region to fellowship and enjoy a meal in their county. Happy Hollow was a lodge on the former Ecusta plant property where different groups were able to meet.
The producers from Transylvania County, many of whom worked in the plant, reserved this space for the annual meeting for many years. Even though the location of the dinner has changed, the name of Happy Hollow continues, as well as the camaraderie and opportunity to recognize outstanding efforts made by individuals to support the beef cattle industry.
