Maggie Valley to host Citizens Academy
The Town of Maggie Valley’s will offer its first Citizens Academy starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. The purpose of the academy is to provide residents/business owners the opportunity to meet with various local government staff and elected leaders and gain insight into local government services and operations.
The Citizens Academy looks comprehensively at the role and structure of local government in the community to include public safety.
Alumni often become informal ambassadors for the local government, share information with their neighborhoods, and often go on to serve on advisory boards. Some even run for elected office.
— Tuesday, May 2: Maggie Valley Police Department
Participants will tour the police department and then have a session on neighborhood watches, trending criminal issues, statistics and a Q&A period.
— Tuesday May 9: Public Works Department and the Sewer Department.
Participants will tour the wastewater treatment facility and receive information on what all the Public Works Department does for the town.
— Tuesday May 16: Planning and Parks
Participants will tour all of Maggie Valley’s parks and greenways as well as the Festival Grounds. They will then return to Town Hall to attend a session about the planning process and learn how Planning and Zoning Boards operate.
— Tuesday May 23: Finance/Taxes/Budgets/Administration
Participants will engage in an information session with the town finance director, town manager and town clerk.
— Tuesday May 30: Friends of the Town Day
Participants will tour the Maggie Valley Chamber of Commerce, Maggie Valley Sanitary District, Maggie Valley Fire Department and Maggie Valley Library. There will be opportunities to ask questions about the different operations and services provided.
All sessions begin at 1 p.m. Dress comfortably and wear walking shoes. Graduation will be held at 6 p.m. June 12, at the regularly scheduled Board of Aldermen meeting.
