Main Street Mile fundraiser set for Aug. 23

The 4th annual Waynesville Main Street Mile race will begin at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23 on Main Street, one mile south of the couthouse in downtown Waynesville. All proceeds will benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children of Greenville, South Carolina.

The race is “the fastest, flattest mile race in Western North Carolina,” even organizer Eric Yarrington, said. During the first three years, the race has raised $15,000 for Shriners Hospital.

From 6 to 7 p.m.Wednesday, Aug. 21 there will be a volunteer meeting and race bags will be filled at CrossFit 2311 at 228-C Muse Business Park in Waynesville.

Runners can pick up their pre-registration packet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 22 at CrossFit 2311. Race day registration and packet pickup is from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Mini Park on the corner of Depot and Main Street across from the courthouse.

Four races will be held: children 11 and younger at 6:30 p.m., females over 18 at 6:50 p.m., male and females ages 12 to 18 at 7:10 p.m. and males over 18 at 7:30 p.m.

A post race party and awards ceremony will take place at the United Community Bank parking lot at 165 N. Main St. The party will feature live music by Soldier’s Heart, food, drinks, local beer from Tipping Point, Bear Waters and Frog Level breweries, childrens’ games, face painting and a loaded race schwag bag.

Awards will be given for overall male and female, overall masters male and female and overall male and female under 19. The top three male and females in each age group will also be awarded.

Registration is $15 before Aug. 22 and $20 on race day.

Free race T-shirts will be given to the first 300 runners to register.
