A Haywood County man was arrested Wednesday and charged with intentionally writing worthless checks amounting to more than $30,000.

Samuel Hartman, 65, of Sweetheart Place, Waynesville, was served with five warrants for felony worthless checks involving three different people. The checks ranged in amounts from $4,000 to $11,500.

Three witnesses claim they knew Hartman and loaned him money when he came to them individually and asked them for assistance with a financial emergency, according to a press release from the Haywood County Sheriff's Office. Hartman is accused of attempting to pay them back with checks from an account which he knew had insufficient funds.

Hartman was released from custody Thursday in lieu of $40,000 secured bond. His court appearance is slated for June 25.

The case, a cooperative effort between the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office and the Waynesville Police Department, remains under investigation. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact either the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 452-6666 or the Waynesville Police Department at (828) 456-5363.
