Man charged with reckless driving, eluding police

A 31-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after leading authorities on a dangerous high speed chase through Canton.

Chisum Wilson, of Rebel Lane, Clyde, sped off when Det. Tom Murphy with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull him over for driving without a license.

Murphy said Wilson was speeding recklessly at 65 miles per hour in a 20 miles per hour zone, without heeding red lights or stop signs.

“He had a total disregard for public safety and even his own safety,” Murphy said.

At one point, a woman walking her dog had to jump out of Wilson’s direction of travel.

He came to a stop near Sagebrush in Canton after nearly running over a 4-year-old boy crossing the street with his mother. Wilson was apprehended even though he attempted to flee on foot.
