Man hit, killed by truck in Canton
An Asheville man was killed after he walked in front of a truck on Champion Drive in Canton Thursday around 9:30 p.m.
Canton Police Chief Bryan Whitner said the 47-year-old whose name has not yet been released wandered into the street in front of Subway. The man driving the truck did not see the man in the road. He died on impact.
Details of why the man walked into the street are unclear.
"We're not entirely sure at this point," Whitner said.
The man has family in Canton, Whitner said.
Police are still investigating the incident but believe it to have been accidental.
Officers received a call from a concerned citizen about the man a few hours prior to the accident. The caller told dispatch that he was soliciting people for money in the Ingles parking lot, but when officers offered to help him, he refused.
The man driving the truck is not expected to face any charges.
