Man jailed for indecent liberties charges
A Waynesville man was arrested Monday for two counts of indecent liberties against a 7-year-old girl.
Phillip Nathan Hannah, 37, is accused of touching his live-in girlfriend’s daughter inappropriately on at least two occasions over the summer, said Det. Scott Muse with the Waynesville Police Department.
The incident was reported July 16 when the “victim was having issues that made the adults around her at the time report it to DSS,” Muse said.
A Haywood County Grand Jury indicted Hannah on Oct. 8 and he was arrested in town Monday.
Hannah was convicted of child abuse in Haywood County in 2009 for driving drunk with a child in the car, Muse said.
He remains in custody at the Haywood County Jail under $24,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior court Nov. 13.
Muse said the majority of his cases — about 80 percent — are indecent liberties with children.
“Most of the suspects are acquaintances with the victim, whether it be a family member, boyfriend, girlfriend or even a neighbor,” he said.
When a child comes forward about inappropriate relationships with an adult, Muse said it’s important to believe the child.
“Don’t question your child,” he said. “Report the incident immediately because the more you question them the more it could damage our case.”
